He didn’t see Felina on Friday, and it made the day drag by even though he stayed busy. Ralph was out doing a presentation at a different school, so Connor covered all the complaint calls. Since Ralph’s accusation of Felina on Monday, Connor had been tactful but cool towards Ralph. He didn’t want to alienate his only co-worker, but he didn’t want to encourage any more bizarre and offensive confidences. Ralph didn’t seem to notice any difference and was as friendly as ever. After the things Ralph had said about Felina, Connor found his geniality grating, so having him out of the office for the day was a nice break.

If he was honest with himself, the thing that he resented most about Ralph’s ridiculous claims was that he couldn’t stop thinking about the orange and white cat with one blue eye and one green eye. He knew it had to be pure coincidence that Leonard had orange hair and one blue eye and one green eye, but it was hard to put it out of his mind. Felina’s habit of having conversations with cats didn’t make it any easier. He didn’t for a second believe that Felina turned Leonard into a cat or that she or anyone else had the ability to do something like that, but the fact that he kept thinking about it irked him. He had even asked Ralph what Leonard’s last name was. It was Kirkland. He had no idea why he had asked, and that bothered him, too.

At least Carol had been leaving him alone. When he had stopped setting the traps at Felina’s house, he stopped setting them at the Pettigrast house, too. He had left a note on the door asking Carol to call him, intending to explain that no cats had been trapped, but when five o’clock came, she still hadn’t called back. Maybe she was afraid that Felina would seduce her husband if she spoke to him at all.

On the drive home, he picked up some champagne. He was pretty sure that Felina had only asked for it as an excuse to invite him to spend the night, and he was glad she had. Not only did it allow him to bring a change of clothes and toiletries without seeming like he was taking his welcome for granted, but knowing that he would be spending the night with her was fodder for all sorts of delicious fantasies. She wasn’t a sorceress, but she was certainly a temptress. He hadn’t spent so much time thinking about sex since he was a teenager.

He spent the day Saturday getting all of his chores done. If Felina was willing, he wanted to take her to do something fun on Sunday. After rushing through his to-do list, he still had a couple of hours to kill. He thought about going to the pet store to get some sort of a bribe for Janus, but it was just too easy to imagine Janus looking gravely offended if he was presented with a toy mouse.
